It’s odd you bring these things up. In my EARLY 20’s I was a manager in training at Microsoft. I was on the track. I remember an anonymous note being put on my desk once. It read, “The truth told with ill intent, beats any lie you could invent.” I was floored. It taught me I didn’t need to be in management. I’ve sworn it off even though I have the tools and the talent.

The situation I’m in now is very similar to yours. Old manager leaves, new manager is not liked. It’s difficult because of the decisions the new manager makes and her general lack of social graces. My guess is she’s a good manager, but socially totally unacceptable for the group.

What does this mean for you? It means that no matter how hard you try, you will never get your employees to see the person the former employee really was. Also, there is a bit of truth, but not always total truth, in what people say. It’s my ‘grain of salt’ theory. There’s a grain of salt truth in everyone’s comments about us and we should examine those thoughts and stretch for personal growth.

I hate feed back like that. But as a leader, not just a manager, you or any of us should respond, not react, with the kind of leadership we want to follow. There is no way I’m following my manager into battle or a project if she is someone who I don’t trust or respect. And unfortunately, respect and trust are not given, they are earned from those around us.

I think you probably have the skills to be a good manager and probably are, but are you someone who they want to follow? Would you follow a name caller ( Schmuck, asshole), or someone who breaks confidentiality?

Don’t get me wrong, I think you will do fine just make sure you are someone. I’m glad you have a place to vent.

Oh, that sucks. I had a workplace friendship horribly sour once as well, and it was a ball of suck for aobut 3 months until everyone forgot it and went on to the next drama. I’d say relax and don’t worry, but you can’t help but fret about it; it will just take time to process. Loyalties are an ever-changing thing in the workplace; keep going on the steady path you were on before and things will eventually calm down.
